The IGP Saint Guilhem-le-Désert in a few words
The only geographical indication bearing the name of a Village, this very young indication created in 2011 is supported by 56 winegrowers.
In the heart of the Occitanie region, north of Montpellier, lies a vast natural area dominated by scrubland and forests, stretching all the way to the foot of the Larzac and Cévennes mountains. This area, crossed by the upper Hérault valley, is rich in remarkable landscapes, where Mediterranean hills and limestone cliffs alternate.
With Saint Guilhem le Désert, a jewel of Romanesque art, whose abbey is listed as a World Heritage Site, a stop on the Way of Saint James of Compostela. But also the castle of Montferrand, perched on its dizzying rocky ridge, and the abbey of Aniane, founded by Saint Benoit in the 8th century.
Vines, wine, and olive trees are also important in this region. The vines, nestled in the scrubland, are most often planted on the few highest cultivable plots, which gives the wines produced an astonishing freshness.
